Semax is a synthetic neuropeptide derived from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), stabilised with C-terminal modifications for extended activity. Like Selank, it was developed at Russia's Institute of Molecular Genetics; it received Russian regulatory approval in 1996 for cognitive indications, with approval later expanded to stroke recovery in 2011, and has decades of documented clinical use there for cognitive and neuroprotective purposes. How It Works

Semax is derived from a fragment of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) — specifically the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro — modified at the C-terminus to resist rapid enzymatic breakdown. Unlike full ACTH, it does not meaningfully affect cortisol or adrenal hormone production.
